Recap Sunday’s Challenge Cup action as Wakefield won at Warrington and Huddersfield knocked out Barrow to book quarter-final places…

Warrington Wolves 12-16 Wakefield Trinity

Wakefield completed a quickfire double over Warrington at the Halliwell Jones stadium as they hit back to seal a 16-12 victory which booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup.

Trinity completed a 38-22 Super League success over the Wolves on the same ground eight days earlier and followed that up with another well-deserved success to earn a home tie against Wigan in two weeks’ time.

Mason Lino was once again in superb form for the victors and was a constant thorn in the Warrington defence, kicking two goals as Trinity ran in tries from Lewis Murphy, Reece Lyne and Corey Hall.

It was another disappointing effort from Daryl Powell’s side as they slipped to a fourth successive defeat, despite tries from Connor Wrench and Josh Thewlis and two conversions from Gareth Widdop.

Barrow 16-30 Huddersfield Giants

Huddersfield were given an almighty Challenge Cup scare by Championship part-timers Barrow before eventually securing a a 30-16 victory and home quarter-final with Hull.

Giants coach Ian Watson took a gamble by resting a host of regulars, with seven changes to the side that lost to Hull in Super League, and it almost backfired as the Raiders pushed them all the way in a gripping sixth-round tie at Craven Park.

The top-flight side needed a last-minute try from centre Innes Senior to finally see off their gritty opponents and claim a victory that ensured an all Super League line-up in the last eight.

It was Barrow’s first home defeat since 2018 but they will claim a moral victory after setting the 3,135 crowd alight with two spectacular tries from exciting Thailand winger Tee Ritson and one from second rower Jarrad Stack.

Barrow, unbeaten in the first five rounds of the Championship, defended with gusto and caused all sorts of problems on attack through the creative skills of experienced half-back Jarrod Sammut and French international Hakim Miloudi.

Challenge Cup Quarter-final draw:

Holders St Helens will take on Catalans Dragons in the quarter-finals of the Betfred Challenge Cup.

The tie, which is a repeat of the 2021 Super League Grand Final won by Saints, will take place in Perpignan and be played on the weekend of April 8-10.

It is the highlight of the draw, which was made at half-time during the Leeds-Castleford sixth-round tie.

The Dragons’ only defeat so far this year was a 28-8 loss to Saints in the opening round but St Helens have not won in Perpignan since 2018, the year the French club lifted the cup at Wembley.

Wakefield, meanwhile, will have a home quarter-final against Wigan.

Quarter-final ties: Wakefield vs Wigan, Hull KR vs Leeds or Castleford, Huddersfield vs Hull FC, Catalans Dragons vs St Helens.
