FIM Announcement: 2008 MotoGP Tyre Rules http://about-sport.net/?p=10520...
The FIM yesterday issued the following statement:
The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs.
MOTOGP: Tyre limits decision due at Valencia http://about-sport.net/?p=10358... A final decision on the 2008 MotoGP tyre restrictions has been delayed until the Valencia Grand Prix weekend.
It has now been confirmed that the tyre war will continue next season after Dorna withdrew the possibility of switching to a single supplier.
But adjustments are still expected to the number of tyres that riders are allowed to use for each race weekend.
This season riders on Michelins and Bridgestones were limited to 14 front and 17 rear tyres per event, and had to nominate their compound choices on the evening before practice began.
The intention was to cut costs, but many believed the restrictions contributed to Michelin’s decline in competitiveness this season as the French company had to end its practice of flying in new tyre designs on race mornings.
It has been suggested that a more generous tyre allowance and changes to the testing limits would make the competition between tyre manufacturers more open.
Bridgestone has won 12 of this season’s 17 races, compared to just five wins for Michelin, although all but two of Bridgestone’s wins came with Casey Stoner, and Chris Vermeulen’s Le Mans success was the only Bridgestone win by any team other than Ducati.
The tyre regulations had been set to be finalised by the Malaysian GP, but will now be discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the Grand Prix Commission at Valencia on 3 November.
