Most of these sites validate the given URL (HTML, XHTML, CSS) or look for the page rank, the amount of links in social bookmarking services and then finally generate a kind of rating. In my opinion those ratings are none sense, but I guess the tools are great for discovering mistakes / failures.

In my case most of them did not work for some reasons so I wrote a little script which looks for files and puts the results in a .txt-file. This script is very very simple and surely can be optimized.
